Foam Rolling (Self-Myofascial Release)

Hey guys, As promised here is my post on Foam Rolling(Self-Myofascial Release). Hope you guys find this interesting and can use this information in your training.

Foam rolling can be a handy method used by many athletes to acutely increase range of motion without a decrease in muscle activation or force (MacDonald et al.,2013, Cheatham et al., 2015).
I find that a quick bout of foam rolling (self-myofascial release) is extremely beneficial just before training as it increases our range of movement and it helps warm up our muscles. I would always finish training sessions with foam rolling (about 30 seconds per muscle group) as I find it helps aid recovery and loosens out the muscles. Rolling for longer than 30 seconds per muscle group can be counter productive!

Athletes across all different types of sports should use self-myofascial release as a method of recovery after training to speed up the rate at which muscles regain their normal size. Foam rolling can also be seen as a great method for injury prevention and has been proven to speed up ones recovery from injury. Again, as I said before, there is no way of completely preventing injury but there are methods we can take to lower our risk of getting injured.

Foam rolling is also great for increasing flexibility. Although it doesn't make a huge difference on the grand scheme of things, for roughly 10-15 minutes after foam rolling, the muscles stretch resulting in increased flexibility. The muscles then return to their normal size.

As someone who has had their fair share of injuries over the years I find that foam rolling offers great relief to the muscles both before and after training! If you don't have a foam roller I would highly recommend one! Alternatively, you could use a tennis ball, which I would sometimes use if I am travelling for competition and can't manage to fit my roller in. The tennis ball, though is not as effective as a foam roller.

Thanks for reading again guys, I hope that was interesting for you! Please feel free to leave a comment or any topics you would like me to discuss in the future.

My Parents, My Coach and I - When is enough enough?!?

Hey guys, sorry for the lack of posts in the last while it has been a really busy time for me with work and training but I'm back and excited to post some of the topics I have been working on!   For this post anyway, I have decided to discuss briefly about how you can develop your game as a player and how key individuals such as family, friends and coaches in particular can play a role. I think that it is very difficult to get the balance between how much interaction you need. For example, "Do you need you parents at the back of the court?" This can be up for discussion and if I am being totally honest a discussion that could go on for years and years. There is no right or wrong answer. As children, we tend to like having someone at the back of the court or on the sideline to cheer us on and give us that extra bit of motivation. But how much is enough? For me, I grew up having my mum, a great badminton player herself to coach me and I am forever thankful to her for t...

How to get a 6 pack?!?

Hey guys, for this post I will talk a little bit about training our abs and how we should do this. It is something quite interesting that a lot of people tend to be misinformed about.  When we look to tone our abs and get that 'summer body' that we all want we tend to go straight into working the ab muscles only by doing sit ups and crunches. However, research has found that directly training our abs like this is not what makes our abs more defined. Unless you are very lean and your ab muscles are under-developed. Working the abs only does not make them show better! This is a huge myth because we cannot just work the muscle and expect the fat to be spot-reduced. That's not how the body works unfortunately.  If toned abs is what you are looking for then you should try focus on a diet specifically for fat loss around your waist. Your abs are there, they just happen to be covered by a layer of fat so a fat loss diet around the waist may be something that could wor...
