Team Ireland Top Group 3A at the Sudirman Cup

Team Ireland have been in China since Thursday the 16th May to compete in the world's most prestigious team badminton competition: The Sudirman Cup also known as The World Mixed Team Championships. Placed as top seeds in group 3A, the third tier of the competition, to play teams from Australia, New Zealand and Nepal.

The first three days here, the team spent climatising to the Chinese weather and also getting used to playing in the hall. On Friday evening the team attended the opening ceremony with all other teams also competing in the competition.

Ireland got their campaign underway on Sunday 19th agaisnt Nepal. The team got off to a flying start, winning this tie 5-0 with each team member playing their part. After the match, we took some time to get some lunch before heading into the practice hall to do some training for our next match which would be against New Zealnd on Tuesday 21st.

On Monday, we had a rest day as we had no match to play so we took our time getting up and ready before heading to training to prepare for the next day.

On Tuesday, we faced off against New Zealand which we knew would be a tricky tie. First up was Sam and Chloe in the mixed. The two played some good badminton but unfortunately they just fell short in the third set in a match that lasted an hour long. Next up for Ireland was Kate in the Women's singles. Again, playing some brilliant badminton, Kate just fell short against her opponent in the third set in a match lasting just under the hour. Not the start we were hoping for, now 2-0 down, the team really had to come out fighting as another loss would seal the tie for New Zealand. Nhat was next on in the Men's singles and as always, Nhat delivered an important victory for the team. He didn't have it all his own way, however, having to dig deep to win in three sets. Chloe and Rachael then took to the court in the ladies doubles. The girls played well together, complementing each others style of play to take the game in two sets and to level the tie 2-2, meaning it was down to the men's doubles pairing of Sam and Nhat. The boys won this match in two sets, bringing home a well deserved 3-2 win for team Ireland. Time to get some food before off to training again!

On Wednesday, we faced Australia. The winner of this tie would top group 3A so it was another important match for Ireland. Australia had beaten New Zealand 4-1 so we knew this would be a tough task but we were all up for it. The mixed was first up once again with Sam and Chloe taking to court, this time they came out on top in another thrilling 3 set battle against tricky opponents. Ireland led 1-0, boosting team spirits. Next up was Kate in the ladies singles. Kate battled well, but unfortunately couldn't undo her tricky opponent on this occasion. Next up was Nhat, reliable as ever he won this match in two sets giving Ireland a 2-1 lead. The women's doubles then took to court, Chloe and Rachael fought hard but narrowly lost out in two close sets meaning the tie was all square again 2-2. The Irish men's doubles of Nhat and Sam took to court once again and again they were convincing winners over the Australians in two sets to secure Irelands spot in the final of tier 3.

The team now has a rest day on Thursday to prepare for their last match of the Sudirman cup against Sri Lanka on Friday at 6pm local time (11am Irish time). Sri Lanka narrowly beat Switzerland 3-2 in the deciding tie in their group so it is going to be a highly anticipation encounter.

Lets go Ireland! 🇮🇪☘ (The match will be live on court 2 on BWF's YouTube channel so be sure to tune in!)

Warm ups 101

Hey guys, welcome back to my blog. For this post I am going to talk about how we should warm up before a training session and I will also give you an example of my warm ups. Hope you enjoy! Warm ups in my opinion are a vital component of training. Every athlete,in every sport should do a warm up. The point behind warming up is that it gradually warms up our body temperature which decreases risk of injury. Skipping a warm up completely can be extremely detrimental not only to your performance but you can also pick up an injury easily because your muscles aren't warm. A warm up should last roughly 15-20 minutes. Dr Ian Jeffreys developed the framework RAMP protocol which allows for activities to be easily classified into a warm-up sequence. 1. R aise 2. A ctivate and M obilise 3. P otentiate (or performance) Phase 1: Raise The aim of the raise phase is to increase our body temperature, heart rate, respiration rate, blood flow and joint viscosity. National's Week!

So, as many of you know my sport is badminton and this weekend is the Irish National Championships. I go into the weekend after some good results at the weekend in Essex where I played on the Leinster senior team against Essex and Ulster. Beating Ulster 7-4 and Essex 6-5, this leaves us second in the table going into the final weekend which is in March where we will hope to qualify for the play-offs for promotion to England's top league. With National's this weekend, I have been very focused and excited to play after being selected to represent Ireland at the European Women's team championships in 10 days time. So I am really looking forward to this weekend and my preparation has been going well. Leading up to a tournament I try not to put too much stress on my body while still training at the same time. Looking after your body is a crucial factor in being able to perform at the highest level in competition. This includes diet, sleep and training. Eating a balanced, healt

How to get a 6 pack?!?

Hey guys, for this post I will talk a little bit about training our abs and how we should do this. It is something quite interesting that a lot of people tend to be misinformed about.  When we look to tone our abs and get that 'summer body' that we all want we tend to go straight into working the ab muscles only by doing sit ups and crunches. However, research has found that directly training our abs like this is not what makes our abs more defined. Unless you are very lean and your ab muscles are under-developed. Working the abs only does not make them show better! This is a huge myth because we cannot just work the muscle and expect the fat to be spot-reduced. That's not how the body works unfortunately.  If toned abs is what you are looking for then you should try focus on a diet specifically for fat loss around your waist. Your abs are there, they just happen to be covered by a layer of fat so a fat loss diet around the waist may be something that could wor
